We’ll admit it, this is a full on rant. But. Here we go.
Chat GPT is NOT a Graphic Designer.
Chat GPT is NOT a professional photographer.
Chat GPT is NOT an expert agricultural marketer.
We’ve started to notice a trend lately, and feel like it’s worth addressing. The situation that occurs is that we’ve been getting a lot of projects where the clients are using Chat GPT for whatever reason.
Maybe it’s a new logo project, and for starters, the client puts a prompt into Chat GPT asking for a logo design, and then sends us that as the basis of what they want their logo to look like.
Another one we’ve seen is a client running their website mockup proofs through Chat GPT, then sending us Chat GPT’s recommendations for things they’d suggest changing.
Or, users sending in content for their website that’s entirely Chat GPT created (emojis, em dashes and all).
Here’s what we’re noticing. Chat GPT is wrong.
In the example of the logos clients have sent in that were generated by Chat GPT — quite frankly, the logos suck. It’s the same fonts they use on everything. It’s the same look. It’s boring. It’s plain. That’s fine if you want to use something like that, but why would you hire a professional firm like us, pay for a professional creative logo, and then simply ask us to recreate the junky logo Chat GPT made for you in 30 seconds? Our designers are better. Our designers spend HOURS creating custom concepts for your unique business. They hand draw shapes, artwork, and concepts unique to each clients business. Why would you value Chat GPT’s 30 second free creation over our design team who has 25 years experience in the business? Why would you want to hamper our designers creativity by insisting that they just recreate the Chat GPT logo that everyone already has. Quite frankly, we refuse to do it. Go somewhere else.
Or, let’s talk about the website mockup revisions that the client ran through Chat GPT. The client sent us a 2 page straight up copied and pasted response from Chat GPT labelled the “DO THIS NOW” punch list for your designer. Okay, that’s bit offensive. We like to think of ourselves as valued design partner and marketing team members — not a Chat GPT gopher. Second, I don’t think the client actually took the time to read it, because in the “do this now” list for our graphic designer, it said to “Implement a Subscribe and save beef, chicken and pork delivery service.” That’s a whole new business model. And, great idea, but that’s a little more than what our graphic designer can do, sir. The Chat GPT “do this now” list involved a complete re-brand for the client’s business. Again, possible, but, that’s an entire separate project than just a website revision.
For the folks who copy and paste straight website content — everyone notices this. Everyone knows what Chat GPT generated content looks like. Chat GPT doesn’t know that using the holstein emoji cow doesn’t work when you’re a purebred beef cattle operation. We all know the little formula of 3 emojis, and 3 hashtags at the bottom. When’s the last time anybody was searching for something on Facebook and went to the search bar and tried to search with a hashtag? Never.
Here’s the bottom line. Chat GPT is a very useful tool. We love it. We use it all the time, for efficiency and a lot more.
But Chat GPT is NOT a professional graphic designer.
Chat GPT is not a professional writer.
Chat GPT doesn’t know the difference between high quality cattle and junkers.
I’m just gonna go out there and say, Chat GPT will never be a better graphic designer than Kristen Davis.
Do you think Chat GPT is going to know the innerworkings of each of our client websites like Jessica Barker or Carole Arriaga who have updated RHD client websites for 15+ years?
Chat GPT will never have more experience in the cattle business than Rachel Cutrer.
Has Chat GPT ever walked through the yards in Denver?
Has Chat GPT ever sat in the sale ring stands and made the split decision of which herd bull would have a better impact on their herd compared to another?
Does Chat GPT know the stress level everyone has the week before their online sale?
Does Chat GPT know that just the subtle way you crop and layout a client’s sale photos on their website can make their cattle look more appealing?
Is Chat GPT willing to stay a few extra minutes at work to get your sale pics up on the same business day? I don’t think so.
Chat GPT is a useful tool but it will never be able to replicate the experience of real human photographers, writers, marketing strategists, and designers. When you hire a firm like RHD, you’re saying — I want more and I deserve more. I want and deserve the expertise of a team that’s spend 25 years in the business and pours all of that experience and talent into making something CUSTOM for me. Not a free, 30 second Chat GPT suggestion that everyone else who’s typing in that same prompt gets.
